Where exactly is Times Square?
Times Square is part of New York City's Theater District, so its boundaries overlap. You can find the Crossroads of the World where Broadway and Seventh Avenue meet on 42nd Street and a triangular pedestrian plaza offers panoramic views of the surrounding lights and action. A block from the Hotel Edison are the famous "red steps" of Times Square, in Duffy Square, both popular landmarks in the Midtown area.
Why is it called "Times Square"?
Despite its name, Times Square isn't actually a square. Formerly called Longacre Square when the space was a public meeting area for New Yorkers in the 19th Century, the junction where the area begins was renamed in 1904 when the Times Building was built as headquarters for The New York Times newspaper. You can see the building, famous as the site of the New Year's Eve ball drop, at One Times Square.
